Charting Batting Practice
WHY CHART B.P.?
The two most important reasons to chart batting practice with PalmScout are: (a)
It motivates hitters to compete against themselves and their teammates on a daily
basis, and (b) it creates an element of game-like importance and emphasis on quality
swings.
Below is an example of how to chart a B.P. session, and which report works best
to motivate hitters afterwards.
HOW TO CHART B.P.
Step 1: Plug your hitters in as the visiting lineup
Select the "Visitor Lineup" button and plug in your hitters. |
Change the number of hitters in the lineup to represent the number of hitters in
the BP group.
This example uses 4 hitters in the group. |
Step 2: Set a Home Lineup with a "Generic" pitcher
Tap the "Home Lineup" button and choose a "dummy team".
Select one of your generic pitchers to be the BP pitcher.
Tap the "Pitcher" button. |
Step 3: Set PalmScout to Practice Mode
Tap the "More" button
on the main menu. |
Choose
"Configure Handheld" |
Select Practice Mode |
Step 4: Chart BP
Charting the pitch type is optional.
Chart the location of the
pitch.
Chart "Well Hit" or not. You may also want to chart whether the pitch was a Taken
Strike or Ball, Missed, or Fouled (Stk, Ball, M, F).
NOTE: Click
here to see the procedure for charting further Actions on balls in
play, such as 1B or GO, without ending the At-Bat for the current hitter. |
Step 5: Ending the At-Bat (moving to the next hitter)
When the hitter is finished, tap "Actions" |
Then,
"End At Bat". |
The main benefit of Practice Mode is that you can chart several pitches and actions
for one batter until his BP session is complete. Then, move on to the next hitter.
When a new group of hitters is due up, simply tap the hitter's name at the bottom
of the Pitch Screen, and send hitters back and forth from the lineup screen (see
step 1).
Now that we have looked at how to chart batting practice, let's look at the
best reports to generate immediately afterwards.
